This is how the pattern works – keeping the side column 4 stitches going up - you are increasing the pattern on one side of the square – decreasing it on the other – so that you get a diagonal split to the square. When you get to the point where the last row is knit 20, purl 1 – you should have your pattern square.
Row 29: *(knit 1, purl 1) – repeat from * to last stitch, knit 1.
Row 30: *(purl 1, knit 1) – repeat from * to last stitch, purl 1.
Row 31: *(knit 1, purl 1) – repeat from * to last stitch, knit 1.
